Colt Brennan has been doing well at the start of Redskins training camp.

4:51 Terrence Austin does something that a rookie seventh-round draft pick can’t do. He drops a Colt Brennan pass that was right in his hands. Austin missed most of the preseason work due to his school schedule at UCLA, and he can’t afford to generate much ill will if he wants to stick around.

5:09 Colt Brennan slips a good pass to Dennis Morris down the seam. So far, in the extremely early going in the competition for the third-team quarterback spot, advantage Brennan.

However, Colt’s competition has been impressive as well.

Richard Bartel – Bartel showed off a pretty impressive arm and good accuracy. Colt Brennan said after that even though he and Bartel are roommates, and despite the fact that Brennan likes Bartel, Bartel is annoying him by how well he is playing.

Colt Brennan – Brennan did not hurt himself today, playing fairly well with good accuracy, but he is getting fewer snaps so far this camp and Bartel looks sharp.

Vaughn McClure has an update on the competition between Chicago Bear teammates Nick Roach and Pisa Tinoisamoa.

“I think there’s just a respect for each other,” Tinoisamoa said after reporting to training camp Wednesday. “It was weird because I didn’t know anything about Nick Roach, and I don’t think he knew anything about me last year.

“Then we watched each other out there. And we were just like, ‘To the best man.’ It could be quite a battle.”

Health might be the deciding factor. The knee still appears to be a minor issue for Tinoisamoa, while Roach has had hamstring and concussion issues in the past.

Stephen Tsai profiles Ray Hisatake.

He described his limited experience as a “blessing,” noting he has not had any serious injuries.

The Panthers told his agent, Leo Goeas, that Hisatake does not have any bad football-related habits. After all, Hisatake’s only football instruction was on the collegiate and pro levels.

“Some people have done things for so long, they don’t want to adjust to something new,” Hisatake said. “I’m more of, ‘You tell me what to do, and I’ll do it.’”

Hisatake participated in the Panthers’ rookie camp and minicamp. He has worked as the No. 2 left guard.

“I don’t know if it’s permanent,” he said of his depth-chart position, “but they had me there.”

And finally, some bad news as Reagan Mauia was cut by the Cardinals.

• There’s something broken in Lane Kiffin’s head. Something that doesn’t allow him to filter what he says before it comes out. We all know people like that, but luckily most of them don’t have the ability to become national news. Watching Kiffin is like seeing a train wreck in slow motion. Can’t look away.

During Thursday’s Pac-10 media event, Kiffin just couldn’t resist. When asked about the lawsuit filed by the Tennessee Titans against him, he said “I think it has to do with the location of the team.” Yeah that’s exactly it Lane. The only reason the Titans are coming after you is because of their proximity to the school you ditched after one season. It has nothing to do with the fact that you hired away one of their coaches. Nothing at all.

One day we’ll find out if Kiffin can really coach. Until them we have to sit back and watch the train.

• David Tyree made one spectacular catch we’ll all remember forever. Other than that, he caught a grand total of 55 passes in seven NFL seasons and is only 30 years old. That second sentence is what makes him signing a one-day contract with the New York Giants so he can retire as a member of that franchise a joke.

I believe it’s marginally stupid when superstars do this. I believe is over the top pointless when someone an average player does it. There’s only one thing that could rival it. The fact that Tyree will hold a conference call today to announce his retirement.

Apologies to Tyree who I’m sure is a stand-up individual, but signing with a team for one day simply so you can retire doesn’t make you a part of that team. Not at all. It makes the whole thing a show about you and only you. Go out gracefully Tyree. We want to remember your catch. Not this.

• Have a player you think might have some maturity issues? Hire his high school coach as an assistant to keep him in check. That’s exactly what the Sacramento Kings have done.

Before and after DeMarcus Cousins was drafted, question marks were attached to the former Kentucky star. Many wondered if he was mature enough to handle the NBA and truly become the superstar he was expected to be. To help Cousins with his development and hopefully keep him on track, the Kings have hired Otis Hughley as an assistant. Cousins played under Hughley at LeFlore in Mobile, AL.

• Chris Bosh claims he didn’t mail it in last season when playing for the Toronto Raptors. In fact, he says: “On the back of my jersey it says ‘Bosh’…The Boshes are hard workers. We have a lot of pride in what we do, in our jobs and in life.” Damn right.

• The front page of ESPN.com’s college basketball page had the following on it this morning: “Purdue’s title hopes rest on Robbie Hummel’s health.” Purdue? Title worthy? Really? I really must not know as much about college basketball as I used to.

• If Ilya Kovalchuk really wants that 17-year deal, he might just get it. There are rumors the KHL might be willing to match the deal he agreed to with the New Jersey Devils if Kovalchuk would consider switching leagues. It would be a big blow to the NHL to lose one of its brightest stars in his prime.

• And finally, some baseball team acquired a big-name pitcher.

The deal at its base is worth $11.25 million – with $8.7 million guaranteed. If Tebow reaches certain milestones over the course of the contract, he can reach that $33 million. Not a bad deal for a rookie who will be given the time and tools to one day succeed as a starter in the NFL.

With a contract agreed to, Tebow can concentrate on his life as a Denver Bronco. With a playbook to learn and new schemes to get used to, it was important for Tebow to get to practice as soon as he could. Now he has the opportunity to learn the offense and get accustomed to the speed of the pro game. As a Gator, Tebow could use his strength to push by would be tacklers. In the NFL, those tacklers are bigger, stronger, and faster. He’ll need every moment he can get as he grows.

While I’m obviously biased (take a quick glance at the header at the top of the page, a certain something on the right might stick out), I do believe Tebow has a chance to become a productive NFL quarterback. He may not have the ideal release and taking snaps under center could be a weakness, but he doesn’t have to save the Broncos tomorrow. Tebow has time. Time to learn the game at the next level. Time to adjust to better defenses. Time to improve his mechanics and refine his abilities. He may not look like a starting NFL quarterback right now, but he’ll be given every chance to get himself there. I’m basically saying, don’t doubt him.

Chad Owens faces his old team when the Toronto Argonauts visit the Montreal Alouettes today. Herb Zurkowsky of the Montreal Gazette talks to Chad, who says he has nothing against Montreal.

Bruno Burnoski, Owens’s Florida-based agent, told a Toronto reporter via email the Als wanted to cut his client’s salary to $42,000 from $70,000. Another source told The Gazette the Als wanted to suspend Owens, meaning they would retain his rights. Predictably, he balked at both potential scenarios.

Owens refused comment on the potential reduced salary. “That’s (the Als’) version.”

We’re certain of this much: The relationship between Owens and his new employers has been pure bliss. In Toronto’s opening two games alone, he returned a punt 90 yards for a touchdown along with a field goal 117 yards for a score. He’s averaging 19.4 yards on kickoff returns and 12 yards on punts.

And Owens also is getting the opportunity to play receiver; he has caught seven passes for 81 yards. He leads the Canadian Football League in combined yards, with 749.

Predictably, he said facing the Als is just another game. “I’m focused on playing the game,” he said. “I’ve moved on and am happy to be in this situation … still doing what I love.

“There’s always incentive,” Owens added. “You want to break one every week – no matter if you have history (with a team) or not.”

I’m sure he secretly hopes that he lights them up! Would be awesome if he could score a TD or two against them.

UPDATE: Doh. Chad Owens had 1 catch for minus eight yards, 1 fumble and 4 kick returns for 74 yards.

• The former Florida quarterback isn’t officially a holdout just yet, but Denver Broncos first-round draft pick Tim Tebow did miss the first day of camp. Tebow and the Broncos appear close to reaching a deal, but with each day that passes, the QB gets further behind. Further behind Kyle Orton and Brady Quinn.

Tebow isn’t expected to start right away. He’s probably more likely to end up firmly in the third spot on the depth chart for a good part or all of his rookie season. But he is expected by the Broncos and head coach Josh McDaniels to do big things either sooner or later.

On Wednesday, Denver went through the playbook and took snaps. Tebow missed all of that. With a good frame work for Tebow set when the Dallas Cowboys signed their first-round pick Dez Bryant, a deal is expected soon. Don’t think Tebow will be out much longer.

• Admit it. You laughed when you heard Baltimore Ravens rookie defensive tackle Terrence Cody couldn’t pass his conditioning test. Admit it. You laughed even harder when you heard his new nickname – Cheeseburger.

Third time was the charm for Cheeseburger Cody. The massive defensive lineman and former Alabama star finally passed the conditioning test on Wednesday morning and is now permitted to practice with the Ravens. Expect a solid rookie year from Cody and of course plenty of fun pictures for us to laugh at over the years.

• Seem like Mark Brunell – who just signed a two-year deal with the New York Jets – has been in the league for a while? His rookie year with the Green Bay Packers was Brett Favre’s third as the team’s starter and fourth in the league.

• Remember when Stephon Marbury was supposed to be one of the next big things in the NBA? Me neither. It was a while ago. In fact, Marbury didn’t play in the league last season instead opting to play in China.

Marbury will stay in China after signing a three-year deal to remain. The deal includes the team creating a company to produce “Starbury” athletic products and a possible opportunity for Marbury to be an assistant coach in the future. You can’t make this stuff up.

• Unhappy team management is always humorous when they express their unhappiness well after a situation occurs. Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert was quick to bash everything possible about LeBron James after the star announced he was signing with the Miami Heat. Gilbert was timely in his response. Toronto Raptors general manager Bryan Colangelo? Not so much.

Colangelo recently said in an interview that he believes former Raptor Chris Bosh may have mentally checked out toward the end of last season. Bosh was cleared to play after an injury, but at times chose not to and Colangelo isn’t happy. It’s time to move on Bryan. Bosh isn’t in Toronto anymore and you’ve known for at least the last year that he wouldn’t be.

• Waiting patiently for a milestone to occur isn’t something I care for. When the milestone is the breaking of a huge record, I’m on the edge of my seat. When it’s a milestone that doesn’t break a record and frankly just isn’t all that impressive considering the era of baseball we are in, wake me when it’s over. I’m looking right at you Alex Rodriguez and your quest for 600 homeruns.

Solomon Elimimian, who’s recovering from an ankle injury, was praised by one of his fellow linebackers.

That veteran Anton McKenzie holds such a belief about players like rookie Solomon Elimimian is even more remarkable when you realize that putting Elimimian on the field could come at his expense.

“We’ve got to get him back on the field,” McKenzie said of the 23-year-old rookie, who watched practice for a second straight day with an ankle injury suffered when he tried to make a tackle on Andre Durie of the Toronto Argonauts in Friday’s 24-20 loss.

“He’s a great kid. We talked pretty much all week going over things for last week. It’s too bad he’s hurt and both of us can’t be on the field.”

From another article, more love from McKenzie:

“Solomon played unbelievable when I was out,” McKenzie said. “He’s playing a heck of a game and it’s too bad that he’s hurt and now both of us can’t be on the field together.”

Due to an injury to another BC linebacker, Adam Leonard may be moved to the active roster.

Linebacker Mike Johnson (ankle) is also doubtful for Edmonton. Former University of Hawaii linebacker Adam Leonard would take Johnson’s spot on the active roster.

Via Patty G, Donovan McNabb talks about spending “Hell Week” in Arizona with some of his teammates, including Colt Brennan.

And McNabb expects that time together — that so-called Hell Week — to pay dividends, not just for him, and not just for the receivers, but even for Colt Brennan. “It was truly big for us. It was it was something we’ll benefit from I think mid-season toward the end of the year. I think for us coming into camp having kinda an upper-hand — [knowing] a little bit more about the offense and what Kyle Shanahan likes to do in this offense and in his mindset — it was easy for myself and Colt because we were just getting out plays, working with each other as well as throwing with the receivers and getting our time in and chemistry there.”

From earlier this month, here’s a NewYorkJets.com article about the three former UH players currently with the Jets: Brashton Satele, Aaron Kia and Wayne Hunter.

Satele and Kia are from Mililani while Hunter hails from just outside Honolulu. Although Hunter understands the transition that Kia and Satele might be facing, he believes that they’ll soon get used to the East Coast and that he can help make the cross-country experiment easier on them.

“It feels good just talking from experience,” Hunter said. “When I went to Jacksonville from Seattle, we had about three or four guys who were from Hawaii so it made that transition much easier for me. I’m assuming they feel the same way. When they first came here, they brought me a sweater from Hawaii. It was nice because you got that aloha spirit roaming around the locker room, which is what I always missed from Hawaii. Just having that island connection just makes our connection better.”

And finally, an update on David Veikune’s status in the Browns linebacking corps.

David Veikune is one more linebacker with something to prove. He was lost last season.

Part of the blame for that is on the coaches. He was a defensive end in college (Hawaii) and the Browns worked him at inside and outside linebacker. He played in 10 games last year and never made a tackle.

Veikune got heavy last year and was pushing 270 pounds. He lost 20 pounds and is concentrating on inside linebacker. He and fellow second-year linebacker Kaluka Maiava will back up Jackson and Fujita.
